AIADMK bags Saidapet assembly seat

The ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Friday demonstrated its electoral supremacy over the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam when it won the Saidapet assembly seat.

Film star Radha Ravi won the seat for the ruling party by a margin of 11,925 votes. He polled 65,868 votes against the 53,943 for DMK's M Subramaniam.

The results of Saidapet assumed significance as DMK chief M Karunanidhi represented it in 1967 and 1971.

The by-election to Saidapet, held on May 31, was marred by complaints of rigging, following which the Election Commission kept the counting in abeyance.

After an enquiry, the EC ordered re-polls in 58 booths out of a total of 850. The re-polling took place on Thursday and the counting was taken up on Friday.

With this, the AIADMK's strength in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly has gone up to 135.
