Elections not yet due in Gujarat, J&K: CEC

The Election Commission on Friday said that elections are not yet due in Jammu and Kashmir and Gujarat and refused to speculate on a possible date.

"We do not even discuss it," Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh told reporters when asked whether the Commission has taken any decision on holding assembly polls in these two states.

The Commission's views assume significance in the wake of Gujarat Governor Sunder Singh Bhandari saying that the atmosphere was conducive for holding polls in the state, which has been witnessing violence since February 27.

Elections in Jammu and Kashmir are due before the first week of October when the term of the state assembly expires.
