PWP withdraws support to Maharashtra government

The Peasants and Workers Party on Sunday withdrew support to the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party-led coalition government in Maharashtra.

On Thursday, the party had pulled out of the government protesting the re-induction of an NCP leader, accused of plotting the PWP's defeat in a zilla panchayat poll, into the Cabinet.

Announcing its decision after a meeting of the Left parties in Mumbai, PWP leader N D Patil said the party could not be blamed if the government collapsed or if the state was pushed into political instability since the onus lay on those in power.

While the Communist Party of India-Marxist, which had already withdrawn support earlier, reaffirmed the same on Sunday, the Janata Dal-Secular could not take a decision on the matter since its president Shripad Patil was unable to make it to the meeting.

However, the JD-S would take a final decision on Monday. If the party also withdrew support, the Left Front comprising the CPI-M, JD-S and PWP would forward a letter to Governor P C Alexander informing him of their decision, Patil said.

However, he said if the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena staked claim to form an alternate government, it would not receive the support of the Left Front.
