2 women, 2 children burnt in Mumbai flat

Four persons, three of them belonging to a family, were burnt to death in a flat at Amrut Nagar in Jogeshwari, a northwestern suburb of Mumbai, on Wednesday afternoon.

A resident of the Al-Meena building, where the incident occurred, told rediff.com that people were alerted to the incident when they saw smoke billowing from the flat, belonging to a person identified only as Sirajbhai, at about 1530 IST.

Siraj runs a business in plastics at Masjid Bunder in south Mumbai. He was not at home when the incident took place.

The witness said he saw four bodies being taken from the flat. They were identified as Zareena Nawab, aged 28, Anis (4), Abu Bakr (6), and Mangala, their servant.

All four victims were rushed to the Cooper Hospital at Vile Parle, but the witness said none of them could be saved.

Police had no immediate clues about the perpetrators of the crime or their motive. They refused to comment on the incident, except to say that they had not ruled out any motive, including revenge.

The witness claimed that all four persons were bound hand and foot before being set alight, but police could not confirm this.

A case of murder has been registered with the Goregaon police.
