Infiltration has come down, Advani tells RS

Infiltration from across the border has come down, but not stopped, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani told the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Intervening during Question Hour, Advani said it was too early to say that infiltration had stopped. That, he said, could only be judged with the passage of time.

But compared to June and July last year, there has been some decline in infiltration this year, he said.

Advani added that there are enough Pakistani infiltrators already inside Jammu & Kashmir to carry out violence for another three to four months with the same intensity.

Referring to Pakistan's claim that it had put a check on infiltration, Advani said one could infer from the statement that Islamabad had been encouraging infiltration in the past.

He said that though Pakistan claims to have stopped infiltration permanently, it is not possible for New Delhi to make an immediate assessment.

The deputy prime minister accused Pakistan of using areas along India's border with Nepal and Bangladesh for promoting infiltration.

Earlier, Minister of State for Home Ch Vidyasagar Rao informed members that the Centre would assist Jammu & Kashmir in modernizing its police force and expediting fencing along the border with Pakistan.

Answering supplementaries, he said 3,000 terrorists positioned along the border were trying to infiltrate Indian territory and added that 75 camps remain active in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
