The Bombay high court on Tuesday dismissed a bunch of petitions filed by six MLAs challenging their disqualification by the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Arun Gujarathi for withdrawing support to the Democratic Front government last month.
The verdict was delivered by Justice Ajit Shah and Justice Ranjana Desai, who upheld the June 13 order of the speaker disqualifying them under the anti-defection law.
The judges dismissed the petitions with costs asking the MLAs to pay Rs 20,000 each to the chief whip of their respective parties.
The petitioners were: Narayan Pawar, Shivajirao Naik, Narsing Patil, Shirish Kotwal (all NCP), Desmond Yates (nominated member) and Gangaram Thakkarwad (JD-S).
The court had earlier directed Sachin Ahir and Rohidas Patil, chief whip of the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress respectively, to file affidavits in reply to the petitions.
