Moves on to settle Manipur's
legislature-judiciary tussle

Encouraged by Manipur government's decision to call a meeting to resolve a judiciary-legislature tussle that has threatened to cripple the working of the courts in the state, the bar associations on Tuesday suggested that the state governor and the chief justice of Gauhati high court could also take part in the meeting.

The High Court Bar Association and the All Manipur Bar Association have decided not to attend courts till a settlement is reached.

The crisis between the judiciary and the legislature erupted after a flurry of contempt of court cases came up for hearing at the Imphal bench of the high court early last week.

While most of the cases were against IAS officials, in one case Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh was summoned by the judges.

The government retaliated by withdrawing security to two judges, which led to a strike by lawyers.
