Govt to split Delhi Police personnel's duties

The government has decided in principle to bifurcate the duties of the Delhi Police personnel into investigation and maintenance of law and order, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

It has been decided in principle to functionally separate crime investigation from law and order functions by providing at the police station level adequate number of dedicated investigation teams, Minister of State for Home Vidyasagar Rao said in a written reply.

The availability of such dedicated teams is expected to improve the quality of investigation, the minister said.

The government has given sanction for the creation of nine mobile crime teams in the national capital, each having a vehicle equipped with state-of-the-art equipment required for collection of evidence, Rao said.

He added that the cost of a fully equipped vehicle would come up to Rs 2 million.

The mobile crime teams were intended to reach the spot of the crime at a very short notice and provide forensic and scientific aid to the investigating officers, he said.

The government has also considered recommendations of the Balakrishnan Committee on 'Reorganisation of Delhi Set-up' regarding the abolition of police commissioner system in the capital, Rao said.

It was, however, not considered the opportune time to change the police commissioner in Delhi, he added.
