Vaiko permitted to use radio in prison

The Madras high court on Monday permitted Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Vaiko, lodged in the Vellore jail since July 11 for a pro-Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam speech, to use a radio within the prison campus.

The direction by Justice V Kanakaraj followed the state government's submission that it had no objection to the POTA detainee using a radio in the high security prison.

Earlier in a petition, Vaiko had sought a direction to the prison authorities to allow him to use a radio to listen to news bulletins.

Vaiko, who was arrested at the Chennai airport on his arrival from the US, has been charged under POTA for allegedly speaking in favour of the banned LTTE at a public meeting near Madurai on June 29.
