Renowned composer-playback singer Sudhir Phadke passed away in Mumbai on Monday in a private hospital, where he had been admitted last week after he suffered brain haemorrhage. The end came at 1030 hrs.
He was 85 and is survived by his wife and son Shridhar, a popular composer himself.
Babuji, as Phadke was affectionately called by those close to him, had several hit Marathi musicals to his credit.
Family sources said that his mortal remains would be kept at Veer Savarkar Memorial at Dadar in central Mumbai from 0900 to 1200 hrs on Tuesday for his admirers to pay their last tributes.
Born in 1919 and a contemporary of greats like Anil Biswas, Phadke composed memorable songs in Hindi and Marathi, some of which went on to create history.
His hit songs include 'jyoti kalash chalake' and 'din hai suhana aaj pehli tariq hai'. The latter gets played on Vividh Bharati on All India Radio on the first of every month even today.
He composed music for over 110 films in his career spanning over 50 years. Himself a freedom fighter, Phadke produced a film on legendary freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
Phadke became a household name all over Maharashtra way back in 1960s with his popular musical stage programme -- 'Geet Ramayan' -- which was based on G D Madgulkar's literary works.
His Marathi compositions too were very popular. Some of his more memorable work in Marathi included 'dehachi tijori', 'nij roop dakhawa' and 'madhu ithe ana chandra tithe.'
His last Marathi film as a music director was 'Pudhcha paool.'
