The United States has expressed its willingness to provide observers and train poll watchers for the October 10 general election in Pakistan.
"The United States looks forward to the holding of free and fair election that will return the country to democratic rule," Assistant Secretary of State Christina Rocca said on Sunday.
She added, "The US hoped to contribute to the election process by training poll watchers and providing elections observers, among other projects."
She said this at a dinner hosted by the American charge d'affaires William Monroe for leaders of several leading political parties after Secretary of State Colin Powell's talks with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
"In our meetings with the President today, we discussed the upcoming election. The President assured us that the polls would be held, and that they will be free and fair," Rocca told the politicians.
