64 died of encephalitis in Assam in last one month

At least 64 people, mostly children, have died so far of encephalitis that has gripped the upper Assam districts in the past one month.

Assam Medical College (AMC) principal Dr Nandeeta Choudhury told PTI over phone from Dibrugarh that so far 185 patients had been admitted to the AMC, adding the condition of some of them was serious.

The mortality rate among children was very high while some of the victims were women, she said.

The patients had come from Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts, while some were admitted from the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh, Choudhury said.

Meanwhile, the state government has geared up to deal with the situation and fanned out doctors in the rural areas to check the spread of the disease.

The disease is mostly prevalent in rural and tea garden areas.
