Facing increasing attacks from criminals and anti-social elements, the Bihar branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded that the state government issue arms licences to doctors to protect themselves and their family members.
The latest incident was a violent attempt to extort money from renowned cardiologist Dr A K Thakur in Patna on Friday morning.
A group of eight armed criminals entered Dr Thakur's house early in the morning and demanded Rs 5 million (Rs 50 lakh) from him, Bihar's IMA secretary Sahjanand Singh told rediff.com.
"When Dr Thakur refused, not only was he attacked and injured, but even the women in the house were attacked and beaten by the criminals," he said.
Over half a dozen doctors were kidnapped and another dozen attacked in various parts of the state this year alone.
Over one thousand doctors from all over Bihar have applied for arms licences, but none have got it till date, Singh said.
