At least seven people died and a dozen were injured when a live shell reportedly exploded near a defence establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation near Chandipur in Orissa's Balasore district, District Superintendent of Police Sudhansu Sarangi said on Friday.
The incident took place on Thursday, but the matter came to notice on Friday after the local fishermen reported the matter to the police, he said.
Inhabitants of the area often picked up used shells and smashed them open to collect brass and lead, which fetched a tidy price, he said.
Those who died were also doing the same when a live shell reportedly exploded, he told rediff.com.
He, however, said the DRDO officials have not formally intimated the police about the incident.
About a dozen people have sustained injuries, with four of them undergoing treatment at the SCB medical college, Cuttack, he said.
