Orissa sacks 37 seniors to make way for junior doctors

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

In a bid to make way for the promotion of 400 juniors doctors in the state's three medical college hospitals, the Orissa government on Friday terminated the services of 37 senior doctors -- 13 professors, 15 assistant professors, seven associate professors and two lecturers.

A notification served on the senior doctors on Friday said the decision had been taken on the basis of a Supreme Court order.

The junior doctors have been rotting in the post of lecturer for the last 16 years with no vacancies coming up in higher posts.

The doctors whose services have been terminated had been appointed illegally through a controversial validation act. They have been asked to hand over charge at the earliest, a top health department official told rediff.com
