EC to send team to Gujarat, says Paswan

The Election Commission would 'very soon' send a team to Gujarat for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation there, before taking a decision on notifying the state assembly election, Lok Janshakti Party president Ram Vilas Paswan said on Friday after meeting the three Election Commissioners.

Paswan asked the EC to hold the election after restoration of 'normalcy' in the state.

After a 50-minute meeting with Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh and two other Election Commissioners, Paswan told PTI that they had assured his four-member delegation that all the points raised by his party would be considered before deciding on holding the poll.

The LJP insisted that the situation in Gujarat was 'far from normal' and demanded that the assembly poll in the state should be held 'only after restoration of normalcy' there.

Paswan also demanded that prior to the election, it must be ensured that the victims of violence are rehabilitated at their original places, where they are registered as voters 'so that they can exercise their franchise right'.

He also said that for rehabilitation of the victims and restoration of normalcy, the caretaker government led by Narendra Modi should be dismissed and President's rule imposed in the state.

"Contrary to the official claims, people feel totally insecure and the victims of the violence are still without a roof on their heads," Paswan claimed in a letter to the EC after his five-day visit to the state, which ended on Thursday.

"In fact, most of the victims of violence are not allowed to return to their original places of residence where they are registered as voters," he said in the letter.
