Floods in north Bihar have claimed over 50 lives so far and affected over 4 million people. The situation is likely to worsen in the coming days, Water Resources Minister Jagdanand Singh said.

The Indian Army has taken up relief and rescue operations in ten districts. An Indian Air Force chopper has been pressed into service to rescue people marooned in flooded villages.

Official sources said over 200,000 people have been affected in West Champaran district alone. Divisional Commissioner Jai Ram Lal Meena said over 1200000 have been affected in Seohar and Sitamarhi districts.

Divisional Commissioner of Darbhanga Amita Paul said over 700,000 people have been affected in Darbhanga, Madhubani and Samastipur districts.

Sources in the flood control cell in Patna said water has entered over 3000 villages in some of the worst hit districts.
