Rains lash Himachal, parts of Punjab

Heavy rains lashed parts of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on Wednesday night, ending a prolonged dry spell that had raised the spectre of drought in the two states.

Chandigarh received some showers in the early hours on Thursday too.

Ludhiana has received 12.6 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, while Patiala recorded 10.2 mm of rain in the same period.

The Bhakra Nangal dam, one of the biggest in Punjab, had received 28.8 mm of rain till Thursday morning.

Light rainfall has been reported in Ambala and Haryana too.

Several areas of Himachal Pradesh received heavy rainfall on Wednesday night. Sundernagar received 14 mm of rain, while a modest 1 mm was recorded in capital Shimla.

Kallu and Pandoh had received 10 mm and 14.0 mm of rain respectively till Thursday morning.

Upper air cyclonic storms over east Jammu and Kashmir and central Pakistan are likely to bring more rain to Punjab and Himachal in the next 48 hours, the Meteorological Department in Chandigarh said.
