Sixth batch of pilgrims
leaves for Amarnath

The sixth batch of nearly 2,800 pilgrims left on Thursday for the holy cave shrine of Amarnath, where over 26,000 devotees have already performed darshan since the beginning of the pilgrimage season on July 19.

The batch -- comprising 2366 men, 286 women, nine children and 182 sadhus -- left in 183 vehicles, official sources said.

They said security at the MAM Stadium, from where the pilgrims' convoys start the yatra, has been beefed following Wednesday's grenade blast at Anantnag bus stand in which 18 people were injured.

Administrative officials said pilgrims are arriving in Jammu ahead of their scheduled date of departure for the cave shrine, making it difficult to accommodate them in various base camps.

About 60 vehicles carrying nearly 3000 pilgrims have so far returned to Jammu from the shrine, they said.
