Manipur govt-court confrontation takes a turn for the worse

In an unusual move, the Manipur government has withdrawn security to the Imphal bench of the Gawahati high court, imposed curfew in the court area and snapped electricity lines.

The Imphal bench has three judges, including Justice N Surjamani Singh, who had issued a summons to Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh in connection with a contempt case.

Reacting to the decision, Gawahati High Court Chief Justice P P Naolekar asked Manipur Governor Ved Prakash Marwah to provide security to the judges and the court in Imphal by deploying Assam Rifles personnel and not those of the Manipur police.

The chief justice is monitoring the situation in Manipur.

The high court in Guwahati remained suspended for an hour on Wednesday morning after the chief justice summoned the judges to discuss the issue.

Meanwhile, the Imphal bench of the Gawahati Bar Association decided to go on an 'indefinite strike' from Thursday to protest against the withdrawal of security to judges and courts in Manipur.

The decision was taken in an extraordinary meeting of the bar association in Guwahati on Wednesday.
