Decision on E-R split by Sunday: Advani

A decision on the issue of bifurcation of Eastern Railway would be taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his deputy Lal Kishenchand Advani by Sunday, even as Defence Minister and National Democratic Alliance convener George Fernandes criticised Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's demand for a review by an expert committee.

"Vajpayee proposes to have discussions on the bifurcation issue and the resolutions passed by assemblies of West Bengal and Bihar after the return of Fernandes from Patna either tomorrow [Saturday] or on Sunday," Advani said in Mathura.

"We will consider the issue from all aspects and then decide," he said.

In Patna, Fernandes brushed aside the demand for an experts committee to review the E-R split and said Mamata's challenging the Cabinet decision was not in accordance with the Constitution.

"How can an experts panel rescind Cabinet decisions," he asked, terming as "unjustified and unfair" the controversy set off by Mamata over the creation of the Hajipur-based East-Central Railway.

As the controversy raged, Railway Minister Nitish Kumar, whose move to split E-R as well as to create seven other new zones was opposed by Mamata, received support from NDA ally Biju Janata Dal.

BJD chief Naveen Patnaik spoke to Vajpayee and Advani in support of the bifurcation.
