Puri rathyatra ends peacefully

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

The rathyatra of Lord Jagannath got over peacefully in Orissa's temple city of Puri on Friday evening with 800,000 people witnessing the event, official sources said.

Although the rituals had begun early in the morning, the first chariot of Lord Balabhadra rolled out at 1425 hours, a district intelligence official said. The chariots of Lord Jagannath and Devi Subhadra started at 1545 hours and 1835 hours respectively, he said.

The three chariots -- Lord Jagannath's Nandighosh, Lord Balabhadra's Taladhwaja and Devi Subhadra's Devadalana -- arrived at the Gundicha Temple in the evening, he told rediff.com.

Although the state government had made massive security arrangements, no untoward incidents were reported, he said.

Among those who witnessed the procession were Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his Council of Ministers.

The three deities will start their return journey on July 20. During this period, several rituals will be performed.
