Vaiko's arrest unwarranted: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday came out in defence of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Vaiko, who was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

"Vaiko has already explained the context of the [pro-Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam] statement made by him. After this explanation, the use of POTA is not warranted. We don't agree with what he says but many of our allies have made statements with which we do not agree," party spokesman Arun Jaitley said in New Delhi.

Asked whether the arrest of Vaiko under POTA had put the BJP in a dilemma over a law it had made, Jaitley said, "I don't think there is any cause for a dilemma. A strong anti-terrorist law was needed. The act is to be implemented by the state government."

He said there was a review committee headed by a high court judge to oversee the entire implementation of the act.
