Police forces take over Ahmedabad on rathyatra eve

Our Correspondent in Ahmedabad

A large number of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed all along the route of the Jagannath rathyatra and in 'sensitive' areas of a tense Ahmedabad as the city braced itself on the eve of its annual religious ritual.

This is the first time in the 125-year history of the procession in Gujarat's premier city that such elaborate arrangements have been made and so many forces deployed all over the city.

The city police has been deployed along the entire route and conducted two rehearsals, one on Thursday morning and another in the evening.

For the first time, metal detectors have been installed near the temple entrance and sniffer dogs checked out the entire premises. Though the two metal detectors and frisking of each and every devotee was not welcomed by the people, the temple authorities explained that it was necessary in view of the current tense situation in the city.

Meanwhile, intelligence reports have warned that violence could start in less secured areas in the state and have a cascading effect in Ahmedabad.
