Petition for deferring presidential poll filed

A candidate for the presidential election, whose nomination was rejected, on Wednesday filed a writ petition in the Delhi high court seeking postponement of the July 15 poll.

He alleged that the Returning Officer and Rajya Sabha secretary general, R C Tripathi, had "illegally" accepted the papers of A P J Abdul Kalam and Colonel Lakshmi Sehgal.

Claiming that his nomination papers were "illegally" rejected by Tripathi, Charan Lal Sahu pleaded that till his petition was decided, the poll should be postponed.

Sahu, a Supreme Court lawyer, alleged that the nomination papers of Kalam and Sehgal were accepted "without affidavits by 50 proposers and 50 seconders".

Alleging that the Returning Officer and the Election Commission had acted "arbitrarily", the petitioner said it had affected his right "so far as fair play is concerned".

He named the Election Commission, the law ministry, the Returning Officer, Kalam and Sehgal as respondents in the writ petition.
