Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party Mufti Mohammed Sayeed wants the state assembly election, scheduled for September, to be postponed 'by a few months'.
Speaking to rediff.com the former Union home minister said, "I personally feel that the election to the state assembly should be postponed by a few months to allow time to revise the electoral list and include the names of the youngsters whose names do not figure in the electoral list."
He alleged that thousands of dead persons continued to figure in the electoral lists.
"This anomaly has to be removed if the elections have to be free and fair," he said.
In a letter written to the Chief Election Commissioner of India, Mufti has suggested that the Election Commission should supervise the revision of the electoral rolls and a fresh list be prepared.
"The people of Jammu and Kashmir should get multipurpose identity cards just as the people in rest of India have so that they could exercise their franchise," he said.
He said the leaders of the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference too need sometime to participate in the election.
"They want to participate in the election, but they too need time and they are also looking for some political package to bail them out of a tight situation," he said.
Asked if the Governor's rule needs to be imposed in the state, Mufti said, "In any case when most of the political parties want Governor's rule, it should be imposed. This is healthy for National Conference as well because if NC wins under Governor's rule then it would not be accused of rigging the polls."
