The Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday said there was no drop in militant violence in the first half of 2002.
A J&K police spokesman, in a statement, said that 1869 incidents of militant violence took place during the first six months of the current year as against 2111 incidents during the corresponding period last year.
In the month of June alone, 306 incidents were reported as compared to 372 incidents that took place in June last year, he said.
"These incidents took away the lives of 488 people and caused grievous injuries to 664 people this year, as against the killing of 501 civilians and injuries to 1101 people during the corresponding period last year," the spokesman said.
This year so far 163 police and members of the security forces have been killed, while 472 have sustained injuries in comparison to 237 securitymen who died and 645 who suffered injuries in the first six months of 2001, he added.
