Two Naxalites were killed in an encounter with the police in Warangal district and the house of a Telugu Desam Party local leader was blasted by extremists on Wednesday, in the backdrop of CPI-ML People's War's two-day Andhra Pradesh bandh call for July 11 and 12.
These incidents were reported even as the state police stepped up vigil and made elaborate arrangements to deal with any eventuality during the 48-hour state bandh beginning on Thursday morning.
According to a state police spokesman, the two PW Naxalites -- identified as U Rajaiah alias Basanta, local guerrilla squad commander of Chityal, and Suryam alias Chandraiah -- were killed in an encounter on the outskirts of Ponugundla village under Regonda police station limits in Warangal district.
At around 11.15 am, a police party, on a routine combing operation, noticed three Naxalites on the move.
When the police asked them to surrender, the Naxalites opened fire. The police party returned the fire, killing two Naxalites on the spot, while one Naxalite managed to flee the scene.
The police recovered a sten gun, a .455 revolver and two HE-36 hand grenades from the encounter site.
Meanwhile, in another incident, Naxalites blasted the house of a local Telugu Desam Party leader, A Vasudeva Reddy, at Gummanampadu village under Bollapalli police station limits near Vinukonda in Guntur district.
