"The leader of the group, identified as Ulfat alias Raiful Islam... confessed having received training in the Pakistani ISI-run camps in Kotli area of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir," Director General of Police R K Pandit said.
Pandit described the arrests as a prized catch as it also led to an impressive haul of arms, ammunition and explosives.
"We have recovered two sophisticated assault rifles of the AK-56 series together with eight live magazines, two Star pistols with as many as 124 cartridges, 12 foreign made grenades, 29 kg of explosives with 51 detonators, which included 24 detonators with timer device ranging up to a period of six months," he said.
"Ulfat began his operation in UP some three years ago, when he came under the garb of a student in a madrassa in Moradabad. And it was during this period that he established contacts with others..."
The DGP said that the team was asked to carry out major strikes in Uttar Pradesh. He identified the remaining three as Zafar Alam, Mohammed Rizwan alias Haider and Taqi.
The bulk of the explosives and arms were recovered from Alam's house in Rampur, he added.
