Coming down heavily on the government for fixing the family pension of Supreme Court judges at a very low level, the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Attorney General to look into the matter immediately.
"We are told that the family pension given to few registrars are higher than that of some retired Chief Justices of India," a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice B N Kirpal, Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice Arijit Pasayat observed, while hearing a petition filed by former judge Kuldip Singh.
"What you are paying as family pension is a pittance. It is a disgrace. You are paying peanuts," the Chief Justice remarked when Attorney General Soli Sorabjee sought some more time to come to the court with some concrete proposals.
Kuldip Singh in his petition had raised the question of pension payable to a judge, appointed directly from the Bar, after his retirement.
The bench fixed September 2 for final disposal of the matter.
The bench in its earlier order had said, "Similar question also arises with regard to bar appointees to the high courts. Experience has shown that the Bar appointees, especially if they are appointed at the age of 50 years and above get lesser pension than the service Judge appointees."
