Nitish rules out committee
on Eastern Zone issue

Railway Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday told a multi-party delegation from West Bengal that an expert committee could not be set up "at this stage" to reconsider the proposed bifurcation of Eastern Zone.

P R Dasmunshi, the Congress chief whip in the Lok Sabha, who was part of the delegation, told reporters after the 60-minute meeting that the minister assured them he would convey their feelings to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The Trinamool Congress, which has been most vocal in opposing the bifurcation, was not part of the delegation.

Ajit Panja, dissident TMC Lok Sabha member, who was in the delegation, said they explained in detail the social and economic consequences of the bifurcation to the minister.

Nitish Kumar told reporters that the discussions were "free and cordial.
