Cop's death outside US embassy may have been 'accidental'

Basharat Peer in New Delhi

The death of a police constable posted outside the United States embassy in Chankyapuri, the diplomatic enclave in Delhi, is being described by police officials as 'accidental'.

Early Wednesday morning, Raj Singh, attached to the PCR van on duty outside the embassy, was found shot dead under mysterious circumstances.

"A bullet from his own weapon killed Raj Singh when he accidentally pressed the trigger while cleaning the weapon," said a police official.

"He was readying to hand over charge as his shift was coming to an end. Then this incident took place. We are certain it was neither sabotage nor suicide," the official added.

Meanwhile, an enquiry has been ordered by the department to look into the exact cause of Raj Singh's death.
