NHRC expresses concern over Gujarat yatras

Expressing serious concern that the proposed 'Gaurav Yatras' and 'Jagannath Rath yatras' could re-ignite communal violence in Gujarat, the National Human Rights Commission on Monday said it expected that "all due care will be taken by the state government in the coming days, both at the political and administrative levels, to prevent situations arising that have the potential to endanger lives and property".

The NHRC, taking cognisance of a report by its special representative P G J Nampoothiri and media reports that the yatras had a "distinct potential for disturbing communal peace", considered the matter during a meeting in New Delhi and asked the state government to "discharge their duties in accordance with the Constitution and the relevant statutory provisions".

There were reports that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad was planning to hold a series of 'Gaurav Yatras' all over Gujarat from July and that the 'Jagannath Rath Yatras' were scheduled to be held on July 12 in over 70 locations of the state.

The NHRC said, "The commission recalls that when its team visited Gujarat between March 19-22, an appeal was made by its chairperson that the 'Asthi-Kalash planned from March 27, in the wake of the Godhra tragedy, be not proceeded with. At that time the Chief Minister [Narendra Modi] had personally intervened to have that programme withdrawn".
