Twenty-three bodies were recovered on Monday in Maharashtra and Gujarat as the monsoon fury claimed 169 lives in the two states in the last one week.
Nineteen bodies were recovered from Gujarat pushing the toll in the state to 75 and four in Maharashtra, where the death figure rose to 94.
Thane district in Mahrashtra bore the brunt of the rains and floods with 61 of the 94 deaths reported from there. Most of the victims belonged to far-flung villages.
Maharashtra Principal Secretary (Relief and Rehabilitation) Suresh Joshi said the torrential rainfall has severely affected public properties, including roads, bridges and various commercial and public institutions.
He said 2055 houses have been damaged and over 450 cattle perished in Bhiwandi, Dahanu, Palghar, Vasai and Wada areas of Thane. Casualties were reported from Raigad, Nagpur, Amravati and Nashik also.
In Gujarat the intensity of rains lashing parts of south, central, north Gujarat and Saurashtra region tapered off on Monday.
As many as 10,770 people residing in low-lying areas have been shifted to safer places in Bhavnagar, Amreli, Baroda, Junagadh, Valsad, Broach and Jamnagar, official sources in Gandhinagar said.
