The Special Task Force of the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka police has encircled the hideout of forest brigand Veerappan in the Sathyamangalam forest area, state Home Secretary Naresh Gupta said.
"However, no details could be given out in this regard, just as no details about the hunt for Mullah Omar in the Taliban context," he told newsmen in Chennai.
Naresh Gupta said that the current action was based on confirmed information about Veerappan's whereabouts.
"The hunt is on in full swing," he said, declining to share details.
Talking to newsmen separately, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam would not share any information with newsmen at this 'crucial stage' of the manhunt.
"Any information at this stage could prove counterproductive," he said.
Gupta had scotched media reports a few days earlier that said that the forest brigand wanted to surrender.
He had also denied reports of the STF encircling his hideout.
The reports gained further currency after Chennai Police Commissioner K Vijayakumar, who was heading the Tamil Nadu STF earlier, was called away to the Sathyamangalam forest area, to help plan the final assault.
