United States based Indian plastic surgeon, Sharadkumar Dicksheet, who has performed nearly 57,000 surgeries on poor children till date in India, has been honoured with the NRI of the Year 2001 award.
Dicksheet, 71, who braved paralysis, cancer and two heart attacks, has been conducting free corrective operations for underprivileged children in India six months a year.
Indian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, K C Singh, would hand over the award, instituted by NRI World magazine and Merryl Lynch, to Dicksheet.
Dicksheet, who travelled to India from his Brooklyn home, has been conducting free reconstructive surgeries on poor children giving their life a new meaning.
The nominees for the award included Nobel laureate V S Naipaul and Pepsico USA president, Indra Nooyi.
"In India a child with cleft palate cannot suckle and can die of starvation or may even be abandoned by poor parents," Diksheet, five times Nobel peace prize nominee, said.
