Madrassa students take to streets
in Kolkata

Thousands of madrassa students on Wednesday joined a rally to condemn West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee's alleged "unsavoury comments" that some unaffiliated madrassas were promoting anti-national activities in the state.

It was reprehensible that the Left Front government was accusing the madrassas, instead of planning development schemes for them, the demonstrators, carrying placards demanding the chief minister's apology, said.

West Bengal Madrassa Students' Union general secretary Mohammed Qamaruzzaman alleged that following the comments, police had been "torturing" and "harassing" innocent madrassa teachers.

He demanded a judicial inquiry into the activities of the madrassas, which were being viewed with suspicion by the government and said the Kidwai committee report on the state of affairs of the madrassas should be immediately submitted.

The state government should also set up a separate Madrassa Service Commission in line with the School Service Commission in respect of the appointment of teachers in the madrassas, he added.
