Jharkhand governor to quit

Jharkhand Governor Prabhat Kumar, who is in the thick of a controversy over allegedly accepting the hospitality of a tainted businessman when he was Cabinet secretary, on Wednesday said he will resign from the post.

In a statement issued by the Raj Bhawan in Lucknow, Kumar denied reports that he had hosted parties whose expenses were borne by an industrialist under CBI probe, and added that he had never done anything that could lower his integrity or dignity.

"I will submit my resignation to the President," he said in the statement, adding that he was deeply distressed over the media campaign against him.

Reports on Monday had suggested that the governor had already put in his papers. However, his Principal Secretary D S Mukhopadhyay issued a statement denying the report.

Kumar said he had been deeply pained by some recent reports alleging violations of the civil service code of conduct by him.

Opposition parties had been demanding Kumar's resignation for the alleged hospitalities he took from Flex Industries Managing Director Ashok Chaturvedi.

The governor said in keeping with the highest traditions of the civil service, he had never gone to the press to refute the "frivolous" allegations.

He said he was deeply hurt by recent reports that he had already resigned following the same allegations.

"I would like to state that some of the parties being reported in the media were never hosted by me, while the payment for the rest was made by me personally," Kumar said.
