Nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi

President K R Narayanan, Vice President Krishan Kant and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee led the nation in paying homage to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his 54th death anniversary on Wednesday.

The three leaders paid floral tributes to the Mahatma at his samadhi at Rajghat in the morning.

Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, Defence Minister George Fernandes, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and former prime minister I K Gujral also paid tributes to Bapu.

A two-minute silence was observed at 11 am, as the three services presented a guard of honour as a mark of respect.

Earlier, an all religion prayer meeting was held at the samadhi, which was attended by the president and Sonia Gandhi.

The Congress president was the first to arrive and stayed at the samadhi for over half-an-hour.
