India trying to discredit Pakistan: Musharraf

K J M Varma in Islamabad

President Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday accused India of trying to discredit Pakistan, as Islamabad has earned a "place of distinction" in the comity of nations as a major strategic partner in the international coalition against terrorism.

Addressing the troops at forward deployment locations of the army near Lahore, Musharraf said his government would never compromise on Pakistan's vital national interests and reiterated his firm resolve to guard its strategic assets.

He said defence preparedness was the right of a sovereign state and India should have no misconception about the operational capabilities of Pakistan, a defence press release said.

Musharraf said the requisite operational plans have been geared up to ensure a matching response in case of any eventuality.

He said he was proud to be the commander of such a fine blend of soldiers. "No one could dare cast an evil eye on the frontiers of a country where its troops as well as the people are imbibed with the higher ideals of courage," he said.

Musharraf has been visiting the frontlines at various places along the Indo-Pak border to address the troops.
