India, Britain to jointly fight terrorism

Britain on Tuesday asked India and Pakistan to resolve their differences through dialogue, even as New Delhi and London vowed to work closely in the fight against terrorism.

During talks that the visiting External Affairs Minister, Jaswant Singh, had with British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, the two sides agreed that they would work to further strengthen the links between the United Kingdom and India, building on Prime Minister Tony Blair's recent visit to India.

"They also discussed the current tension between India and Pakistan," an official statement issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth office said.

At the meeting, Straw expressed the view that both India and Pakistan resolve their differences through dialogue.

"India is a key partner for the UK. This has been confirmed again in the months since September 11. We have been working closely with India in the fight against terrorism," Straw said after the meeting.

Jaswant Singh earlier attended a meeting of the Commonwealth Committee on Terrorism.
