Medical entrance exam racket busted in UP

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow

The police on Sunday busted a major racket in admissions to postgraduate programmes in the medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh.

Two medical graduates of the Meerut Medical College, together with the owner of a coaching institute and one of their close associates were arrested on the charge of taking Rs 500,000 from each aspirant appearing for the Uttar Pradesh Postgraduate Entrance Examination.

Arvind Chaturvedi, deputy superintendent of police, said, "We acted on a complaint made by one Dr S P Misra, a graduate of Meerut Medical College, who had come here to take the post graduate entrance examination."

He said that two doctors of the Meerut Medical College contacted Misra, with a demand to pay them Rs 500,000, if he wanted admission.

The modus operandi of the gang, as disclosed by Misra, was very simple.

"The candidates were to be taken to an undisclosed destination where solved answer papers would be made available to them one night before the entrance examination," he said.
