Tamil Nadu Home Secretary Naresh Gupta has denied media reports that forest brigand Veerappan had offered to surrender within two days.
"Neither has the brigand offered to surrender, nor has the Special Task Force of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka police reduced their search operations," he told newsmen in Chennai.
"In fact, we have intensified the search operations," he added.
Earlier, a senior police officer of the STF had told rediff.com that the forest brigand could surrender before the police any day this week.
He said that negotiation with Veerappan for fixing a date of surrender was at an advanced stage.
"Veerappan has agreed to surrender before us. We are working out the modalities and consulting the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Now the negotiation between Veerappan and us is on some of the terms and conditions of surrender," the STF officer told rediff.com from Coimbatore.
He said one of the main reasons Veerappan wants to give up the forest life and surrender before the government is his old age.
"He is 55 and is sick and tired ever since we have been hunting for him for the past one year. In the last few weeks we have been trying to convince him through our negotiators to surrender before us," the officer said.
