Fresh tremors in Kutch on anniversary
of quake

K G Suresh in Bhuj

Memories of the devastating earthquake on January 26, 2001, were revived when people came running out of their houses and children cried as tremors shook the Kutch area of Gujarat on Saturday night and Sunday.

The tremors, that lasted a few seconds, occurred even as the district, worst affected by last year's tragedy that claimed over 18,000 lives, was observing the first anniversary of the quake.

No loss of life or damage to property was reported. People in Dhamadka, Rapar, Samkhyali, Gagoda and Lodai villages came out of their house screaming dharti kampan (earthquake).

Government employees staying in prefabricated structures in Bhachau, the most affected taluka, also rushed out of their camps fearing the worst.

Ironically, the tremors occurred barely a couple of hours after Chief Minister N Modi offered prayers to Mother Earth, to prevent recurrence of earthquakes, at the Khatri Chowk in Anjaar town.
