Musharraf calls meeting of army commanders

With tension on the Indo-Pak border showing signs of easing, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has convened a meeting of top army commanders on January 31 to review the internal and external security situation and, perhaps, discuss a strategy to deal with India's demand for extradition of 20 criminals and terrorists.

The meeting, to be held at the army headquarters in Rawalpindi, would review the security situation and the state of military preparedness, media reports said on Sunday.

One issue that could figure on the agenda is the strategy to be adopted to deal with the extradition of 14 Indians in the list of 20 criminals and terrorists forwarded by New Delhi, the report said.

There appears to be a degree of agreement between India and Pakistan over Islamabad's decision not to extradite five Pakistani nationals, including the leaders of the Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Tayiba, it said.

In the forthcoming conference, Musharraf would inform the commanders about his talks with world leaders, The News said.

The meeting is also expected to discuss in detail Musharraf's forthcoming visit to the United States, beginning from February 12, which would be his first bilateral visit to America after he took over power in October 1999.
