Police close to major breakthrough in USIS attack case

The Kolkata police on Friday claimed it was close to achieving a major breakthrough in the American Centre attack case obtaining certain 'vital clues' even as no arrest has been made so far.

"The names can come up fast but whether they can be arrested depends on whether they are within the country," Deputy Commissioner of Police Peeyush Pande said.

Pande also confirmed that the investigation team had stumbled upon 'some definite clues' but refused to give further details saying, "We are now working on those clues and this can't be divulged to you at this stage."

Pande said a total of 90 people have been picked up for 'examination' but denied reports in a section of the press that these included any Bangladeshi. No arrests have been made so far, he added.

Fifty of those detained had criminal records, Pande said.

The police have got sketches of the attackers made on the basis of video footage from the close circuit TV in the USIS office as well as eyewitness accounts.
