Interpol issues red corner alert against Ansari

Interpol on Friday issued a red corner notice in a kidnapping case against Dubai-based underworld don Aftab Ansari alias Farhan Malik, who has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack at the American Center in Kolkata.

"Central Bureau of Investigation Director P C Sharma has informed me that a red corner notice has been issued against the fugitive," Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani told reporters at a press conference in New Delhi.

About his extradition from Dubai, he said, "The home ministry along with the Ministry of External Affairs and other agencies has been pursuing the matter with UAE authorities."

India and the UAE have an extradition treaty.

The CBI, which is the representative of France-based Interpol in India, issued the red corner notice against Ansari following a request from West Bengal Police in the kidnapping of Kolkata shoe baron Parthapratim Roy Burman.

Advani also ruled out any role for US Federal Bureau of Investigation in the probe into the USIS attack

"FBI has no role in the investigations and happenings in India. These days when the battle against international terrorism is on, we have agreed to exchange intelligence inputs (with it)," he said.

Asked whether the attack on American Center was a terrorist strike or a criminal act, Advani said Ansari, who claimed responsibility for the shooting, had been earlier recruited by ISI, given Pakistani passports and was located in Dubai.
