What has been done to ban
smoking, SC asks states

Annoyed with the poor response from the states regarding the implementation of its order banning smoking in public places, the Supreme Court on Friday gave them one week to state the steps taken in this regard.

A bench comprising Justice R P Sethi and Justice K G Balakrishanan, hearing a petition filed by Maharashtra Congress leader Murli Deora, asked the states to file their responses within one week.

The court on November 2, 2001, had directed all states and Union territories to immediately ban smoking in public places and public transport systems.

The court had also asked the police commissioners of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Ahmedabad to submit status reports of action taken against cigarette manufacturers violating advertising code.

The order banning smoking in public places included hospitals, health institutes, court buildings, educational institutes, libraries and auditoriums, the court said.

The railways recently banned smoking in trains and platforms.
