Nation on high alert; commandos deployed in key areas

Amidst increasing threat of terror attacks on the Republic Day, the nation on Friday went on an unprecedented security alert with the deployment of sharpshooters atop key government buildings and air defence measures in place.

The nation's capital was turned into a virtual fortress with nearly 65,000 security personnel on duty to prevent a recurrence of the December 13 attack.

National Security Guards commandos and para-military forces were deployed at strategic places, mine-sweeping teams pressed into service and sharpshooters and snipers positioned on roof-tops.

A special alert was sounded in West Bengal where unidentified gunmen astride motorcycles killed four police personnel in front of the American Center building on Tuesday.

In neighbouring Tripura, security measures were put in top gear in view of the Republic Day boycott calls given by some insurgent outfits.

A security blanket was thrown across Jammu and Kashmir to foil any attempt by militants to disrupt Republic Day celebrations.

In West Bengal, maximum vigil is being maintained along international borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal to prevent influx of undesirable elements.
