'Toughest arrangements' made for R-day

With terrorist threats looming large over this year's Republic Day celebrations, the Delhi police has made "the toughest arrangements", that include mobile and static air defence measures and deployment of sharpshooters and commandos to thwart any kind of attack.

Keeping in view the prevailing "tough security scenario" and accentuation of the "cause of concern" by the recent suicide attacks on Parliament and Jammu and Kashmir assembly, elaborate security arrangements have been made to cope up with such a situations, Delhi Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma said on Thursday.

He said various kinds of threats have been received, which include suicide attack, indiscriminate firing and car bomb blast to target VIPs.

Asserting that nothing is being left to chance, Sharma said adequate arrangements have been made to thwart any kind of ground or aerial attack.

Commandos from the National Security Guards and paramilitary forces will be deployed at strategic points to handle any armed intrusion or planted explosive devices. Minesweeping teams have been pressed into service, sharpshooters and snipers will be positioned on over 500 rooftops and all high-rise buildings along the parade route will be fortified, he said.

Arrangements have also been made to thwart any attempt by terrorists to use moving projectiles or any other unmanned flying objects, he said
